Cherry Creek

The Cherry Creek neighborhood possesses the opportunity for a unique and one-of-a-kind style of living. About half high-end retail and office space, the other half, high-end residential, is becoming more exclusive on a daily basis. Cherry Creek has the highest dollar per square foot in Denver, justified by the location and superior home construction. In the early 2000’s you wouldn’t normally exceed $1.5 million for a home here. Currently, you can find $3 million homes and up. Most of the dwellings are town homes but you can also find some single family homes in this area. Most of the older 40’s and 50’s ranches are either scraped off or will be scraped off, making way for the elaborate and amenity-stocked town homes and condos. Because of the style of construction in this area with the emphasis on larger homes, you’re not going to find a lot of homes with much yard at all. This is a drawback for families, however, the schools are higher quality than the average Denver school. There are also great areas for family and singles entertainment in walking distance. Often buzzing with outdoor festivities, the Saturday Farmer’s Market, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, the Taste of Cherry Creek and the Cherry Creek Sneak give this area a community flavor that visitors adore. Along the north border, 6th Avenue’s roaring row of amenities has something for everyone, including a bikram yoga studio, herb apothecary, lively pub and legendary Italian restaurant with one of the best wine-dinner deals in town. During the colder months, children dazzle the crowd at the Fillmore Plaza ice rink. In the summer, sidewalk sales and Films on Fillmore entertain residents way past dusk. If you’re into the high style, this is a neighborhood worth considering!

Bromwell Elementary School

About Bromwell Elementary School: Bromwell Elementary has a rich history dates which dates back to the first wooden frame school built in 1867. The original school, located on the present school site, burned down in 1883 and was replaced by a Colorado sandstone building that was then replaced in 1976.

Bromwell students today benefit from a well-rounded curriculum that includes a Gifted and Talented/Challenge program, daily physical education, and weekly opportunities in visual arts, music, and technology-based research training. A literature-based language arts curriculum balances the reading of authentic, high-quality literature with the instruction of specific strategies and skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Scores of Bromwell students on standardized assessments, including the ITBS and CSAP, consistently surpass the Colorado and DPS averages and rank Bromwell among the top schools in the district. Bromwell also claims the distinction of having a higher percentage of open-enrollment students through the CHOICE program than any other DPS school.

Bromwell is also home to a Physically Disabled Center Program that serves students in a partial inclusion model. This allows these students to be included in regular classroom activities as well as have their special needs met in the areas of occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech/language, and technology training.

Bromwell School has a tradition of very strong parent support and involvement. Parents and other volunteers put in hundreds of hours each month to serve our student population. The CDM and PTSA work together to provide maximum support for Bromwell students. Fund raising projects have been established to enrich curriculum programs in the areas of physical education, visual arts, music, library, Challenge, and technology.

Teller Elementary School

Grades: PK-5

Enrollment: 229

Special Features: All-day kindergarten offered; All-day early childhood education offered

About Teller Elementary School: Teller Elementary School is located in the historic Congress Park neighborhood. Our school's wonderfully diverse population mirrors the ethnic, racial, and economic diversity of the surrounding community. We expect that every child attending Teller will be accepted, and our strength is in providing a strong academic program within a welcoming and safe environment. We are a supportive community of parents, students, teachers, and neighbors who have fun at our annual Halloween carnival, game nights, pancake breakfast, and ice cream social.

Teller has a history of high academic achievement, and we are committed to each child's scholastic improvement. Our reading ITBS scores have consistently been in the upper 25% of DPS schools. When taking into consideration our percentage of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunches, our reading ITBS scores have placed Teller in the top 10% of schools in the district for effectiveness and success in teaching. However, our CSAP reading results are lower than the ITBS scores since our second-language learners and special education students are included in the reported CSAP scores. Our challenge is to help all of our students perform better on the CSAP assessments.

Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students have consistently surpassed the District average percentage of students scoring at or above proficiency on the reading, writing and math CSAP for the past three years. Our goal is to continue to improve Students' CSAP performance at Teller to either match or surpass the State average percentage of students scoring at or above proficiency on the reading, writing and math CSAP assessments.

We have a dedicated teaching staff willing to meet this challenge. They have implemented effective research based literacy programs with strong professional development components. Through a grant from a local business group, our school was selected in 2001 to be part of a three-year pilot program using the Lindamood-Bell process for improving reading achievement. The Lindamood-Bell program benefits all students. It has been successful in treating students with decoding and/or comprehension difficulties and for accelerating students who are already reading at grade level. Another research-based program is Reading Recovery. A Morgridge Family Grant is funding this 3-year Reading Recovery pilot. The pilot targets first grade students. Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention of one-to-one instruction by a trained teacher. This intervention is only available for first grade students determined to be at risk of learning to read. We began building wide implementation in August 2002 the DPS Literacy Program. This highly effective researched based program teaches reading and writing for 90 and 60 minutes respectively in a workshop format. Teachers are engaging in weekly staff development for support in the implementation of the DPS Literacy Program.

Analytical thinking and problem-solving strategies are emphasized in all our math and reading instruction. Our goal is to incorporate into daily lessons the skills and strategies students need to be proficient on state standards. Through our various programs (see below) and methods of instruction, we strive to meet the diverse needs of all our students.
